From Hide to Handmade: The Journey of a Pair of Leather Moccasins

When you look at a finished pair of handmade leather moccasins, it's easy to see the final result - the soft leather, hand-burned design, careful stitching, and the shape of a shoe ready to be worn.

What you don't see are all the steps that came before it.

A handmade pair of moccasins doesn't begin as a shoe. It begins with a hide, a pattern, and many individual pieces that have to be cut, designed, prepared, and stitched together by hand.

We recently documented the making of a pair of our moccasins from beginning to end, and we thought it would be fun to take you behind the scenes and show you some of what goes into turning leather into a finished pair.

It All Begins with the Leather

The first step is choosing and preparing the leather.

Leather is a natural material, which means no two hides are exactly the same. Color, texture, markings, and even the way different areas of a hide stretch can vary. Part of working with leather is learning how to work with those natural characteristics rather than expecting every piece to behave exactly the same way.

The individual pieces of the moccasins are carefully laid out and cut from the leather using the appropriate pattern and size.

Placement matters. We aren't simply trying to fit as many pieces onto a hide as possible. We also have to consider the characteristics of the leather and how each piece will eventually function as part of the finished moccasin.

At this stage, the finished moccasins can still be pretty difficult to imagine. What will eventually become a pair of shoes is still just a collection of individual leather pieces.

But that's where the transformation begins.

Adding the Design

One of the details that gives our moccasins their individual character is the artwork.

The designs are added by hand rather than printed onto the leather by a machine. For this particular pair, a bear paw was chosen for the top of each moccasin.

Because each design is created individually, there can be subtle differences between the two moccasins. That's something we love about handmade work.

Those little variations are evidence of the hands that created them.

Rather than two perfectly identical copies rolling off an assembly line, you're looking at two pieces that were individually worked and then brought together to become a pair.

Preparing Everything for Assembly

Once the pieces have been cut and the designs are finished, it's time to prepare them for assembly.

This is one of those stages that most people never get to see.

Before everything is stitched together, the leather hardly resembles the finished moccasin. The pieces need to line up properly so that, as they're joined together, that flat leather begins to take on its three-dimensional shape.

And then comes one of the most time-consuming parts of the process.

One Stitch at a Time

Our moccasins are sewn by hand.

Not hand finished after being sewn by a machine.

Actually sewn by hand.

A needle passes through the prepared leather, the thread is pulled through, and the process is repeated again and again along the seam.

One stitch at a time.

It's slow work, but that slow process is part of handmade craftsmanship.

There's something especially satisfying about watching two separate pieces of leather gradually come together and begin to resemble the moccasin you've been picturing from the beginning.

Watching the Moccasin Take Shape

Eventually, something pretty wonderful happens.

The collection of flat leather pieces starts looking like a shoe.

At this stage, you can really begin to see where everything is headed. The sole has been joined to the upper, the bear-paw design is front and center, and the leather has started taking on the familiar shape of a moccasin.

There is still finishing work to be done, but the transformation from hide to footwear is well underway.

This is one of my favorite parts of making something by hand—that moment when the materials stop looking like separate pieces and suddenly become the thing you set out to create.

The Final Details

Finishing a pair isn't simply a matter of tying the last stitch.

The remaining pieces and details need to be completed, the pair needs to be checked over, and the leather and stitching need to be inspected.

Because leather is a natural material and the moccasins are handmade, every finished pair will have its own individual characteristics.

That's not a flaw.

That's part of what makes handmade leatherwork special.

From Hide to Handmade

And finally, after cutting, designing, preparing, sewing, shaping, and finishing...

A pair of moccasins emerges.

It's quite a transformation when you compare the beginning of the process with the finished pair.

What started as leather and a pattern is now something functional—something that can be worn, broken in, and allowed to mold to the person wearing it.

That's one of the beautiful qualities of genuine leather moccasins. With wear, the leather begins to soften and conform to the foot, making the moccasins increasingly personal to their owner.

Why Handmade Takes Time

We sometimes get questions about how long handmade items take to make, and we completely understand why.

We're used to a world where we can click a button and have something arrive at our doorstep a day or two later.

Handmade works differently.

There isn't a warehouse filled with thousands of identical pairs waiting to be pulled from a shelf. Creating moccasins involves multiple steps, and many of those steps simply can't - and shouldn't - be rushed.

Someone has to select the leather.

Someone has to lay out and cut the pieces.

Someone has to create the designs.

Someone has to prepare everything for assembly.

And someone has to sit down with a needle and thread and sew those pieces together, stitch by stitch.

That's why we believe it's important to show the process occasionally. When you only see the finished product, it's difficult to appreciate just how much happened before that final photograph was taken.

More Than Just a Pair of Moccasins

For us, creating handmade leatherwork is about more than making something to sell.

It's about craftsmanship. It's about working with natural materials. It's about continuing skills that rely on human hands rather than machines and creating something that's meant to be used and enjoyed.

Every hide is a little different.

Every design is created individually.

Every stitch is placed by hand.

And every finished pair has its own story.
